Yes. Everything is quite alright. On the contrary, I thought I check in to see how you are fairing. This is your first time outside the station, after all.
Between you and Doctor McCoy overseeing the well-being of the crew, I cannot fathom that being an easy task.
Thank you, Hermann... it's sweet of you to check in.
[ she has to choose her words very carefully here though, because the last thing she wants to do is invite someone to her pity party when they've certainly got better things to do. ]
It's been a lot but I think I'm managing. To be honest I'm not doing much. Dr. McCoy and Captain Kirk have been wonderful spearheading a lot of our relief efforts. I've been very grateful to them.
While I am sympathetic to your sentiments, there is no need to be so modest. You are doing everyone here a great service, no matter how light the task is. I'd give yourself a little credit.
[Not that Hermann is any better. He knows his work is only a piece of the larger picture at hand. But he is certainly envious of those in charge of everyone's health.]
But good. As long as you are not wearing yourself thin. I know, at times, this group can be a handful. I find that stepping out for a breath of fresh air helps or indulging in recreational reading.
[ kind of him to call her self-deprecation modesty, not that marta is all that surprised by it. but it's hardly his responsibility to see that she remain in better spirits, and she's not about to make it that way. ]
It's a spirited group, for sure. I kind of think it's refreshing. Things are so much quieter where I'm from. But I've already burned through all the books I managed to bring with me. Did you bring any yourself? Maybe we can trade.
Only several titles, unfortunately. I was rather conservative with my packing this time around. But Iβm not opposed to such an arrangement. If, of course, you are open to what most consider to be a rather βdryβ read.
"The Demon in the Machine" by Mister Paul Davies and "The Principles of Quantum Mechanics" by Mister Paul Diracβ. The latter title does sound a tad drab but I assure you it provides all its information in a very succinct manner.
[ horror? marta can't quite imagine someone as sensible as hermann indulging in a genre that's so dependent on provocation... but then again, maybe that's the point. ]
A good friend of mine wrote mysteries for a living. I'd love your opinion on any of his work.

But now I'm worried what I've got to offer won't be to your liking.

It's high time that I partake in a pastime that doesnβt require rigorous study.

Let me guess — murder and mystery?

But still an astute observation. I could never say no to a well-crafted mystery.

Then I can't exactly decline such a tantalizing invitation. I'd be happy to give it a read, Miss Cabrera.
